Julian has been a Mixmaster on Chicago Radio for over 20 years, the longest of any DJ in the world. At the age of 14, Julian began his career promoting and spinning records at his own events while attending high school. He quickly became a crowd favorite and landed a job at the hottest teen club in the Chicagoland area. Within 3 months the club's attendance had more than doubled and Julian was well on his way.
Julian was featured as a weekly guest DJ on one of Chicago's legendary radio stations. With the popularity of his guest appearances, he secured a residency at a rival station where his mixes were featured during the afternoon rush hour rating period. While ferociously building his brand name on air, Julian entered a nationwide Battle of The DJs, competing to become the next 'elite' member of the infamous "Hot Mix 5". Facing thousands of entrants, four sectional competitions, and a final battle, Julian finished victoriously. He reigned supreme and became the most talked about DJ in Chicago. Using the radiowaves as his platform, Julian became a strong proponent of a musical sound that would inevitably be called House Music. As an early pioneer of House Music, little did Julian know the impact he would have on the world of dance music forever!
Julian began producing his own music and re-mixing records for such artists as Queen Latifah, Pet Shop Boys, TKA, Fast Eddie, Tyree, and Kool Rock Steady among others. With over 100 productions to his name and the ability to move crowds all over the world, Julian had become a household name in Chicago.
In 1989 Chicago's B96 WBBM FM, a top forty radio station, approached Julian. The station's management knew the impactful ratings that his show garnered at the other stations and they wanted to bring that street power to B96. Thus, the B96 Street Mix was born and Julian was the proud father. Julian's mix show was so rapidly successful, that within the first three months, the ratings in his time slot more than doubled. B96 increased his airtime accordingly, quickly realizing the potential of their newly acquired asset.
In 1994 Julian created a radio show that would represent the music evolution occurring on the streets and in the night clubs of Chicago. The show was called "The B96 Street Flava". Airing prime time each Sunday, "Street Flava" was an immediate hit. As was consistent with his prior accolades, the success of "Street Flava" prompted B96 management to wisely offer Julian the overnight air shift at B96, and he accepted. Four months later Julian moved to a prime slot becoming the host of B96's night show. Teaming with Tim "Spinnin" Schommer, Julian enjoyed the success of hosting the most listened to night show in Chicago for eight straight years.
Julian "Jumpin" Perez continues to be at the forefront of mix show radio and has earned a reputation of being one of the most well-known and respected Mixmasters in the history of Chicago radio. He currently holds the position of Mix Show Director. You can catch Julian mixing live at clubs all across the Midwest. And of course, you can hear his mixes on B96, Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 5 am.
With a reputation that precedes him, Julian has surely effected the music industry in a manner that will not soon be forgotten.
